Lac de Tueda in Méribel-Mottaret

Lac de Tueda, a magical spot at the heart of the Les Trois Vallées area

Little-known and yet so peaceful, Lac de Tueda is nestled within Meribel-Mottaret at the heart of the Les Trois Vallées area. Located at 1,750 m (5,741 ft) of altitude, it is one of the gateways to the Vanoise National Park, and it is very sought-after for the quality of its water. Lac de Tueda is bordered by cimbo pines, a species commonly known as “king of the Alps”, which create a beautiful landscape worth the detour.

A marvellous discovery departing from Méribel-Mottaret

From Hôtel AlpenRuitor, at the heart of Méribel-Mottaret, you can easily set off on an hour-and-a-half round-trip hike. Whether in the summer or winter, the lake area offers a number of activities.  In the winter, you may enjoy cross-country skiing on the gently sloping 5-km (3-mi) blue slope or the flat 3-km (1.8-mi) green slope around the lake.

If you’re ready for a change from skis, consider a hike, snowshoe excursion, or pulling the kids on a sled through this fairy-tale setting. Discover the Tueda natural reserve, which stretches from the lake to the famous Gébroulaz glacier.

A horse-drawn carriage is also a great way to discover the park entrance (although you cannot continue all the way to the lake) as a family and with no particular effort, except for opening your eyes and admiring the snowy landscape.

A surprising event

As soon as the snow melts, in the month of April, don’t miss the incredible sight of marmots awakening from their hibernation. You’ll never forget their shrill whistling calls. Visitors of all ages will appreciate this pure experience of nature.

Not to be missed at Lac de Tueda

Our recommendation: On the mountain slopes, at the heart of the Tueda natural reserve, you’ll find the Refuge du Plan. Ideal for all: professional skiers, beginner hikers, or just wanderers ready to enjoy a drink on the sunny terrace. This refuge is a great way to leave the beaten track. In the winter, the refuge is open in the evening only by reservation.  Bring a lamp and enjoy a typically Savoyard evening: a relaxing break complete with generous local dishes prepared on-site.
